First Day of School Letter

August 28, 2013

Dear Parents,

Welcome to Kindergarten, Room A-3 at Ortega School. Our names are Michele Brazil and Diane Harrold.  We will be job sharing in your child’s classroom this school year. Together, with our combined experience, we plan to provide your child an excellent school experience.  Mrs. Brazil will be teaching mostly on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Mrs. Harrold will teach mostly on Thursdays and Fridays.  A job share is special because the students will have two teachers whose backgrounds are different but who share the same philosophy.  All of our policies, plans, and discipline will be consistent so the transition for the students will be smooth. We wish to promote an atmosphere where the children are safe, where self-esteem can thrive and where learning is at its optimum. To accomplish this we will need lots of help!  We know with your support this will be a very good school year.

Here are some helpful things for you to know and do:

*Please send a healthy snack for your child each day.  Please send a nutritious snack for your child (half-sandwich, fruit, cheese, crackers, etc.) that is separate from his/her lunch. Also you may send water in a thermos or bottle. No juice for snack please.  Please do not send “go-gurts” or fruit cups as they are hard to open and squirt all over. Yogurt in containers is acceptable.

*Please label all of your child’s lunch boxes, bags, sweaters, jackets and coats.  Also, each child needs a full size backpack to carry home homework, books and projects. It is very important that the backpack come to school every day.  Please empty your child’s backpack every night to check for school work and notes.

*Yard Duty in the morning begins at 8:20 a.m.  Please do not allow your child to arrive before 8:20 am as there is no supervision on the yard.  When the bell rings we will teach the children where to line up on the yard.  Once we are assembled, we will walk as a class and enter our classroom through our outside door. Please try to be on time and honor our request to line up on the yard. If your child is late to school please do not knock on our outside door.  You will need to go to the office and get a late pass.

*If you are late to pick up your child you will need to pick him/her up at the office since we do not allow the children to remain in the yard unattended.  At dismissal, parents and caregivers should meet their child at the back door.  Daycare children will stay with us until personnel come to pick them up.

*If you would like to help in our classroom please sign and return the attached Parent Volunteer Sheet by Tuesday, September 4th.  We need parents to help with literacy centers, library, special projects, and preparing for projects.  (We have things you can do at home!)  We will also need a room parent to help with parties and special events.  We depend on parent helpers to assist with many of the activities we do in Kindergarten!  We will not need helpers for the first two weeks of school.  Volunteers need to check in at the office and get a badge, since we are discouraging people from wandering the halls for the safety of all!
Also, please be courteous and turn off cell phones while working with the students.

*If you need to speak with one of us please drop a note in our mailbox or telephone the school, email us at (650) 738-6670. We typically do not check email or messages over the weekend, but will get back to you as soon as possible.  Our email addresses are mbrazil@pacificasd.org and dharrold@pacificasd.org Please include both of our names in your email.

* Kindergarten Assessment:  Please sign your child up for an assessment time.  The schedule is posted on the Kinder door. If your child attends TTT, you do not need to sign up as we will pull them from TTT to do the assessment.

*On Fridays each week, your child will bring home a Kindergarten Newsletter to let you know all about the fun things we did and learned during the week.  The will allow you to work with your child at home on things we have learned at school.  The newsletter will also contain important information about future weeks, so please read it carefully.

* Another important item to note is that the school and State asks that if your child is sick with a fever or is sneezing or coughing that they remain at home. Sick children will be sent home so it is a good idea to have an action plan. Kindergarten students generally miss quite a few days the first year because sick children come to school. Please take this into consideration. We teach the children to sneeze into their arm and then get a Kleenex, blow their nose and then use the hand sanitizer.

*We will discuss our plans, homework and curriculum on Back to School Night on Thursday, August 29th at 6:00 in our classroom.  This is a night for adults only, so you can listen and learn how to help your child be a successful in school.

We are very excited about working together as a kindergarten team.  This will be a great year for all!

8:30 12:00 p.m.

October 7, 2013- May 30, 2014

Your child will be scheduled for a once-a-week small group slot from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.  We will let you know which small group day is your child’s after assessments are completed.

OUR CLASSROOM WILL NEED TO BE A PEANUT-FREE ZONE!!!

We have a student with a severe peanut allergy and exposure could cause extreme illness or worse. This will be a challenge but together we can keep a safe environment for everyone. Please check all packages and do not send items with peanuts or peanut oil in them to school. Also many products are made in factories with peanuts so the children will be taught not to share any food with each other. If someone forgets and sends a peanut item for snack your child will have to eat in the office to insure the safety of their classmate.  For many of us peanut butter and jelly is a staple but this can continue to be something that is eaten AT HOME! Also the children will wash their hands and the table with be wiped daily to help with all germs as well as the possible peanut contamination.
